Pulau Banggi (May 9) - Pulau Banggi is set to undergo a major infrastructure upgrade following the announcement of development funding exceeding RM33 million aimed at improving basic amenities, connectivity, and public services across Sabah’s northern island communities.
The allocation was announced during a working visit by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who outlined several key projects designed to address long-standing infrastructure gaps affecting residents on the island.
The development package includes road upgrades linking several villages such as Kampung Limbuak Laut, Kapitangan, Damaran, and Bayangan Laut. These improvements are expected to enhance mobility between settlements and support local economic activities.
Attention will also be given to bridge rehabilitation works and upgrades to essential public facilities, including healthcare services, education infrastructure, and safety-related installations. Authorities say these improvements are intended to strengthen access to basic services for island residents.
Transport infrastructure is another key focus, with funding directed toward improvements at the Karakit jetty, one of the main access points between Pulau Banggi and the mainland. A separate jetty in Kampung Dogoton is also included in the upgrade plan to support daily movement and logistics.
Education facilities are part of the initiative as well, with allocations set aside for dormitory upgrades on Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan, aimed at improving accommodation for students in remote areas.
Additional funding has been channelled into community development programmes covering areas such as healthcare support, education, institutional capacity building, environmental initiatives, and human capital development.
Officials said the overall objective is to reduce development disparity between remote island communities and more urbanised parts of Sabah by improving access to essential infrastructure and services.
For Sabahans, particularly those living in northern coastal and island districts, the announcement carries significant practical implications.
Residents of Pulau Banggi have long faced challenges linked to limited transport access, inconsistent ferry services, and restricted availability of healthcare and education facilities. The planned upgrades could help ease these issues by improving connectivity and reducing dependence on difficult sea travel conditions.
Better roads and improved jetties may also strengthen local livelihoods, especially for fishing communities and small traders who rely on efficient transport routes to move goods to markets in Kudat and other mainland areas.
