KIMANIS – In a remarkable show of solidarity, over 1,000 runners of all ages converged for the Nuhu Dolorosa de Kamijan Trail Run 2.0, raising funds to rebuild the aging St Anne Chapel in Penampang Baru.
The event, inspired by Monsignor Fr. Nicholas Stephen's decades of service, addressed the chapel's urgent need for expansion. "Our current building can't accommodate Sunday congregations anymore," explained organizer Jessel Kamijan, noting how the community banded together to make the fundraiser possible.
A Run for All Generations
Archbishop Datuk John Wong set the pace by participating in the 7km men's open category, while three race distances catered to different fitness levels:
- 7km fun run (including 76-year-old Loius Ening Gabriel, who completed the course)
- 12km challenge
- 30km endurance test
Notable participants included former Mount Kinabalu Climbathon champion Guanus Salagan and his wife Kona Liau, adding star power to the cause.
Winners Circle
The grueling 30km category saw Sheron Sariman and Natasya Soon clinch top honors in the men's and women's divisions respectively, with cash prizes allocated toward chapel reconstruction.
More Than Just a Race
Beyond the trails, the event transformed into a vibrant community fair:
- Rahmah mobile markets offered affordable essentials
- Food stalls and karaoke sessions kept spirits high
- A raffle draw featuring a grand prize motorcycle and 20 electrical appliances boosted donations
Nuns, priests, and volunteers from neighboring parishes worked tirelessly to ensure smooth operations, embodying the event's collaborative spirit.
Rebuilding Faith, One Step at a Time
With funds secured through registration fees (ranging from RM50-RM150), merchandise sales, and donations, the chapel committee can now begin phased renovations to preserve this 68-year-old landmark for future generations.
"This wasn't just about fitness—it was about faith in action," reflected Kamijan as volunteers packed up, already planning next year's edition.
