Johor Bahru (May 26) - The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, has voiced strong support for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), stressing that military training exercises are essential for national security and should not face unnecessary restrictions.
In a statement issued on May 26 through the official social media platform of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail said Johor remains fully committed to supporting military operations and training activities conducted within the state.
He stated that the armed forces have the necessary space, authority and cooperation to carry out exercises aimed at strengthening defence readiness, improving operational capabilities and ensuring the country’s sovereignty remains protected.
The remarks came amid national discussion surrounding military training activities following recent comments from the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, who called for prior consent from the Sultan of Pahang before military exercises are conducted within the state.
Without directly naming any individual, Tunku Ismail criticised attempts to use military-related issues for personal interests or public attention, describing such actions as regrettable.
He also stressed that discussions involving military affairs and constitutional matters should be approached with a proper understanding of the Federal Constitution, as well as the realities and responsibilities faced by military personnel.
According to the Johor Regent, members of the armed forces dedicate their lives to defending the nation and should be respected for their sacrifices and commitment. He added that military exercises play a critical role in preparing personnel for real-world operations and national defence responsibilities.
Tunku Ismail further assured that the Johor Royal Institution and the state government would continue providing support and cooperation to the military, including ongoing recognition of military veterans and retired personnel.
The statement later received support from the Malaysian Armed Forces, which expressed appreciation for the Regent’s stance. Military leaders described the support as an important reflection of cooperation between the armed forces, state authorities and the royal institution in strengthening defence preparedness.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil also welcomed the Regent’s remarks, noting that procedures involving military exercises are already governed through established approval mechanisms involving relevant federal and state agencies.
The issue has generated wider public discussion about the balance between environmental considerations, state authority and national security requirements.
For Sabah, where military presence remains strategically important due to the state's location near international maritime boundaries and the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone), the debate highlights the continuing importance of maintaining operational readiness while ensuring cooperation between federal agencies, state governments and local stakeholders.
As Malaysia continues to navigate evolving security challenges, the differing perspectives from Johor and Pahang have brought renewed attention to how military preparedness, constitutional responsibilities and state interests intersect within the country's federal framework.
