JPJ Warns Drivers: Expired Licences Beyond Three Years Disqualify BUDI95 Subsidy

Kota Kinabalu (Mar 27) - Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) has reminded motorists that driving licences expired for more than three years will render them ineligible for the BUDI95 fuel subsidy programme.

JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said eligibility for the subsidy depends on having a valid or “active” licence. Licences that have lapsed for less than 36 months can still be renewed, allowing drivers to maintain access to the subsidy.

However, once a licence has been expired for over three years, it is no longer eligible for straightforward renewal. In such cases, individuals must retake and pass the driving test before being allowed to drive again, effectively disqualifying them from the subsidy until their licence status is restored.

JPJ stressed that keeping a licence valid is not only a legal requirement but also a key condition for accessing government assistance programmes such as BUDI95. Motorists have been urged to renew their licences within the allowable timeframe to avoid complications.

Authorities also reiterated that driving without a valid licence is an offence, underscoring the importance of compliance with road regulations.

For Sabahans, the reminder carries significant implications, particularly given the state’s heavy reliance on private vehicles due to limited public transportation options. Losing eligibility for the BUDI95 subsidy could increase daily travel and operational costs.

Those in rural areas may feel the impact more strongly, as long travel distances and dependence on vehicles are common. An expired licence beyond the permitted period could lead not only to additional costs for retesting but also to the loss of financial support tied to fuel subsidies.

The announcement also highlights the importance of timely licence renewals, especially in areas where access to JPJ services may be less convenient. Staying compliant ensures that Sabahans can continue driving legally while benefiting from available government assistance programmes.

Overall, the directive reinforces the connection between proper documentation and access to subsidies, encouraging motorists in Sabah to remain proactive in maintaining valid driving licences.
