Tambunan (May 18) - Jeffrey Kitingan has downplayed speculation surrounding the presence of Mohd Shafie Apdal at a recent Kaamatan celebration in Keningau, insisting that the event was purely cultural and not linked to any political cooperation.
The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president said Shafie’s attendance at the Kaamatan festival should not be interpreted as a sign of a political alliance between their parties, stressing instead that the harvest festival is meant to unite Sabahans from all backgrounds.
Jeffrey reportedly pointed to this year’s Kaamatan theme, “Harvesting Unity” and “Celebrating Harmony”, saying the spirit of the celebration reflects inclusiveness and togetherness among Sabah’s diverse communities.
“This is Kaamatan… Kaamatan is for all, right?” Jeffrey said when responding to speculation triggered by Shafie’s appearance at the event.
The issue gained attention after photographs and videos circulated online showing the two leaders interacting during the festival, including appearing together during ceremonial activities associated with the event. Their public interaction prompted speculation among political observers about possible cooperation between Parti Warisan Sabah and STAR.
Shafie had earlier thanked Jeffrey for the invitation, stating that Kaamatan has always served as a platform for Sabahans to gather, reconnect, and celebrate the traditions and cultures that unite the people regardless of background.
Jeffrey also noted that Shafie remains part of the current federal government framework under the Madani administration, while reiterating that the Kaamatan celebration itself should not be politicised.
The comments come amid continued political realignments in Sabah following previous state elections, where STAR and Warisan contested separately after STAR exited the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition before the polls.
Political observers note that even informal appearances between rival leaders can quickly fuel speculation in Sabah’s fluid political environment, where alliances and political cooperation have historically shifted over time.
