Kota Kinabalu (Mar 19) - Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called on Apple users nationwide to urgently update their devices following the discovery of multiple security vulnerabilities affecting iOS.
In a recent advisory, Apple Inc. released critical software updates to address several flaws, including an exploit chain known as “DarkSword” that could potentially compromise affected devices.
According to MCMC, these vulnerabilities could be exploited together, allowing unauthorised access to users’ devices and exposing them to various cybersecurity risks. These include potential data breaches, installation of spyware or malicious software, theft of personal messages and files, as well as possible device monitoring or surveillance.
The commission strongly advised users to install the latest iOS updates immediately to protect their devices. It also recommended enabling automatic updates, avoiding suspicious websites, and downloading applications only from official platforms such as the App Store. Users are further encouraged to restart their devices after updating and remain vigilant for any unusual activity.
MCMC emphasised the importance of practising good digital hygiene and staying informed through verified channels to minimise exposure to cybersecurity threats.
For Sabahans, the advisory carries added importance as smartphones play an increasingly vital role in daily life — from online banking and digital payments to communication and business operations.
Failing to update devices could expose users in Sabah to cyber risks that may lead to financial losses or privacy breaches. This is particularly relevant for small business owners, freelancers, and individuals who rely heavily on mobile devices for work and transactions.
In areas where digital awareness may vary, the advisory also highlights the need for stronger cybersecurity practices and education. Keeping devices updated and secure will help ensure uninterrupted access to digital services and protect users from potential threats.
Overall, the warning serves as a timely reminder that as Sabah continues to embrace digital connectivity, maintaining strong cybersecurity measures is essential for both individuals and businesses.
