Kota Kinabalu (Feb 14) - Sabah’s higher education sector reached a historic milestone with the official upgrade of North Borneo University College (NBUC) to North Borneo University (NBU) after receiving approval from Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
The achievement makes NBU the first Sabah home-grown private higher education institution to attain full university status, marking an important step forward for education development in the state.
University leaders described the recognition as the result of years of dedication and commitment from its management, academic staff, students, and industry partners who have worked to build a stronger foundation for higher education in Sabah.
The institution’s leadership includes Group President Prof. Datuk Sr. Dr. Mohaizi Mohamad, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Sr. Dr. Azimuddin Bin Bahari, and Vice President Assoc. Prof. Doretty R. Jiroh, who have played key roles in steering the institution’s growth and academic development.
From Humble Beginnings to University Status
North Borneo University began its journey as a small higher learning institution before growing steadily over the years into a respected private education provider in Sabah. Its transformation into a full-fledged university reflects the institution’s expanding academic programmes, improved research capacity, and growing recognition within Malaysia’s higher education landscape.
The university offers programmes ranging from foundation and diploma levels to undergraduate and postgraduate studies, focusing on fields such as business, information technology, hospitality and tourism, agriculture, aviation, and governance. Its curriculum emphasizes industry relevance, practical skills, and innovation to prepare graduates for modern workforce demands.
Strengthening Sabah’s Higher Education Landscape
The upgrade is expected to elevate Sabah’s profile as an emerging hub for higher education in East Malaysia. As a full university, NBU will be able to broaden its academic offerings, strengthen research activities, and expand collaborations with industry and international institutions.
The recognition also highlights the growing maturity of Sabah’s education sector, demonstrating that the state is capable of developing strong local institutions that can compete nationally and internationally.
What It Means for Sabahans
For Sabahans, the upgrade brings significant opportunities. Students in the state will have greater access to quality higher education without needing to leave Sabah, helping reduce education migration to Peninsular Malaysia.
The development may also stimulate the local economy through increased student enrollment, job creation, and stronger partnerships between the university and industries in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Beyond academics, the university is expected to contribute to community development by producing skilled graduates, conducting research relevant to Sabah’s needs, and supporting innovation that benefits local communities.
The milestone is widely seen as a proud moment for Sabah, signaling the beginning of a new chapter not only for North Borneo University but also for the future of higher education in the state.
