Kuala Lumpur (Dec 18) - The Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) market has gained a new entry with the official launch of the TQ Wuling Bingo EV, a compact fully electric hatchback aimed at making EV ownership more accessible to the mass market. The model is introduced by TQ Wuling, a joint venture involving Tan Chong Motor Holdings and China-based SAIC-GM-Wuling.

The Bingo EV is locally assembled in Malaysia, a move that allows it to be priced competitively in a segment that has traditionally been dominated by higher-priced imports. It is offered in two variants — Bingo Pro and Bingo Max — with prices starting from approximately RM67,800 and rising to about RM72,800, positioning it among the most affordable electric vehicles currently available in the country.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor producing 50 kW (around 68 horsepower), paired with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. The Bingo Pro features a 31.9 kWh battery with a claimed driving range of up to 333 kilometres, while the Bingo Max uses a larger 37.9 kWh battery that extends the range to about 410 kilometres under standard testing conditions. With DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in roughly 35 minutes, supporting daily urban use and occasional longer trips.

In terms of design, the Bingo EV adopts a compact, city-friendly footprint with a rounded, retro-inspired exterior. Its closed grille, distinctive LED lighting and two-tone colour options give it a youthful appearance. Inside, the cabin is configured for simplicity and functionality, featuring dual 10.25-inch digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, along with a floating-style centre console.

Despite its compact size, the Bingo EV offers practical storage, with a boot capacity of about 395 litres, expandable to more than 1,200 litres when the rear seats are folded. Comfort features include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, cruise control and multiple storage compartments, making it suitable for everyday commuting and errands.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock braking, tyre pressure monitoring and blind-spot warning, providing a comprehensive safety package for a vehicle in this price range.

For Sabahan motorists, the Bingo EV is particularly relevant for urban centres such as Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau, where daily driving distances are generally manageable within its driving range. Lower running costs compared with petrol vehicles and reduced dependence on fuel price fluctuations may appeal to city-based drivers. However, its compact size and EV charging requirements mean it is best suited for urban and suburban use rather than long rural journeys.

With the introduction of the TQ Wuling Bingo EV, Malaysian consumers now have a more affordable entry point into electric mobility. Its combination of competitive pricing, local assembly and practical features signals a growing shift towards wider EV adoption in the country.
