Kuala Lumpur (May 18) - Anwar Ibrahim and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are expected to hold discussions that could shape the future relationship between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly as attention turns toward upcoming elections and long-term political cooperation.

Anwar confirmed that he intends to meet Zahid following growing debate surrounding cooperation between PH and BN in Johor. The discussions come after Johor BN reportedly indicated its intention to contest all 56 state seats in the next Johor election, sparking speculation that both coalitions could eventually compete separately despite remaining allies at the federal level.

Speaking on the matter, Anwar said discussions with BN would be conducted properly and in a spirit of mutual understanding, while expressing hope that any negotiations would benefit both sides.

Political observers believe the situation reflects mounting pressure within both coalitions to preserve their individual grassroots influence while maintaining federal cooperation. Some analysts suggested that PH and BN may eventually contest separately in certain elections before potentially reuniting afterward if coalition arrangements are required to form governments.

The political landscape has also become more dynamic following recent developments involving former PKR leaders Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who recently assumed leadership roles within Parti Bersama Malaysia. Political analysts believe the emergence of new political alignments could further reshape coalition strategies ahead of future elections.

Johor remains one of the country’s most important political battlegrounds, with BN currently controlling 40 out of 56 seats in the state assembly, while PH holds 12 seats and PN controls three.
