Kota Kinabalu (Jan 26) - Gaya Street Block D is scheduled to reopen on January 30 once ongoing road surface improvement works are completed. Progress on the project was reviewed during a site inspection carried out on Monday to ensure the upgraded area is safe and suitable for public use.

The visit was led by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who oversees Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK). He was accompanied by DBKK Director-General Datuk Lifred Wong, Deputy Director-General (Operations) Robert Lipon, along with relevant department heads and officers.

During the inspection, emphasis was placed on the need for immediate trimming of trees and overgrown vegetation around buildings, as well as thorough road surface cleaning. These measures are aimed at maintaining cleanliness and safety, reflecting Gaya Street’s role as one of Kota Kinabalu’s most frequented public and tourism areas.

The reopening of Block D will enable approximately 18 Api-Api Night Market traders and 61 Gaya Street Sunday Tamu traders to resume their usual business activities. This development directly affects Sabahans, particularly small traders and hawkers who rely on Gaya Street for income, as well as residents and visitors who frequent the area for local food, cultural products and community gatherings.

Members of the public and traders have been reminded to adhere to cleanliness guidelines to ensure a comfortable and pleasant environment for everyone once the area is reopened.
